Performance with sculpture
Wood round rod, wire, insect screen
Dimensions of the sculpture: 20cm (Diameter) X 150cm (Length)
in the city center of Münster
During the lockdown phase of COVID-19

The performer wears a long protective mask made from insect screen fabric, which has numerous holes. She believes that this mask perfectly hides her face or even makes it disappear, and she walks visibly through public spaces. In the documentation video of the performance in Hamburg, a racist situation can be observed.
For me, a mask represents an object that creates a distinction between "me" and other people. Long before I came to Germany, I regularly wore a mask in my home country. There were even times when someone referred to me as "Mask." Additionally, through conversations with people in Germany, I realized that masks, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, could be perceived as a symbol of Asians.
This artwork not only highlights the ironic situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic but also illustrates the challenges of adapting to a new society, as well as the discrimination and racism that migrants experience.
During the pandemic, astonishing and surreal phenomena emerged. People had to maintain a distance of 1.5 meters and refrain from physical contact with one another. At the same time, racism against Asians intensified. However, when everyone wears the same mask that covers the mouth and nose, it becomes difficult to recognize individual differences in identity.
